ATK, previously known as Atletico de Kolkata, are the defending champions. They won the inaugural edition as well as the 2016 edition by defeating the same side – Kerala Blasters, in the finals. Having established their superiority in the ISL over the years, they will certainly fancy their chances when they begin their run in the league. They have got themselves a new squad, the highlight of which is the Irish legend, Robbie Keane, who spent the prime of his career playing for big teams like Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.
However, it doesn’t mean that other sides will go down without a fight. Kerala Blasters have revamped their squad completely after struggling to win the title on two occasions. They got themselves the former ATK striker Iain Hume, along with the Bulgarian superstar Dimitar Berbatov. He has played an important role as a forward for many popular teams such as Bayer Leverkusen, Spurs and Manchester United. Having a player of this caliber in the side will certainly bolster the confidence of Kerala Blasters, who look quite strong, at least on paper.
Mumbai City FC, who finished at the top of the league table last season but failed to perform well in the playoffs, will be hoping for a turnaround this time. After performing poorly in the first two seasons, they achieved quite a bit of success in the 2016 season. But with their star striker Diego Forlan gone, it will be up to their new signings to perform and get results. Rafa Jorda and Everton Santos are quite experienced players, and they’ll have to coordinate well with the young lads to score goals and win.
We also have NorthEast United FC, who have a good team and vigor but lack the ability to finish. In the last three seasons, they haven’t made it to the playoffs even once. They have signed many international players with the hopes of going the distance this time. The team will be coached by Joao Carlos Pires de Deus, who can be considered to be a controversial choice by many. Having failed to deliver results as a manager for many sides, managing NorthEast United FC successfully will be his redemption.
Among the two new entrants, it is Bengaluru FC who stand out as the favorites. Having honed their skills in the coveted I-League already, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them excel in the ISL. They have won the I-League title twice already, in addition to winning two Federation Cup titles. The team has thrived under the leadership of Albert Roca, who served as the assistant coach for FC Barcelona and Galatasaray. They won the I-League on their debut. Now, can they repeat the same feat in the Indian Super League?
