PKL gets new title sponsor in record deal with Vivo

Vivo signs up as title sponsor of Pro Kabbadi League

Pro Kabaddi is making huge waves in the country and as if to prove its popularity is riding a wave of crest, Vivo have joined the tournament as their chief sponsor. What adds to the intrigue is that the deal is worth Rs.300 crore for a period of five years, making it easily the second-most popular sport in the country behind cricket. Book Pro Kabaddi 2017 tickets online here.

This five-year deal begins from the 2017 edition of the PKL which will have more teams involved as well, according to a news report. Four more sides will be added to the tournament and instead of having two tournaments in a single year, the competition will have more matches and will be played all year around. It will become a 12-team affair and a total 132 group games could be played in the competition.

Pro Kabaddi League was started in 2014 by sports management company Mashal Sports Pvt. Ltd. Star India, and they also telecast the competition live on their network of channels, the Star Sports. Star Sports owns a 74% stake in the competition.

Star India confirmed this was the biggest deal outside cricket.

Sanjay Gupta, MD at Star India, said: “For the last three years, we have not had a title sponsor. We have found a partner which happens to share a common vision with Star Sports and the values which kabaddi brings to the youth of this country.” The tournament had earlier been called the Star Sports Pro Kabaddi League but will now be named Vivo Pro Kabaddi League.

Interestingly, Vivo is also the title sponsor of the Indian Premier League, having paid Rs.200 crore for two years after Pepsi’s deal with the IPL ended in 2015. By signing up with the PKL, it does look like Vivo might not want to extend their contract with the IPL but that remains to be seen.

The fifth edition of the Pro Kabaddi League will begin in July 2017 and information about its tickets will be released here soon.
