Chennians FC confirmed as 8th ISL franchise after Bangalore drop out

Team Chennai replaces Bangalore franchise in Indian Super League. The IMG-Reliance backed Indian Super League had its first hiccup with Sun Group’s Bangalore ISL team franchise opting out of the two-month long football tournament. Replacing the team from Bangalore will be Team Chennai.

Team Chennai will partner with Italian powerhouse, Inter Milan as a part of club development initiative. The owners of Team Chennai are yet to be announced. For the drafts to pick foreign players, Prashant Agarwal of Play on Skills represented Team Chennai.

Team Bangalore’s owners, Sun Group had earlier announced their withdrawal from the ISL.

The Sun Group claimed to have decided on it after having spoken internally, said they wanted to thank the Indian Super League management for its support.

IMG-Reliance also stated in the joint statement that all the players picked by the Bengaluru club will be provided opportunity to participate in the ISL.

The International Player draft was organized today to pick the overseas players needed for each club (7 players for each club). The draft consisted of players from all over the world and as Anupam Dutta, CEO of ISL’s holding company Football Sports Development Private Limited stated that the average age of the players available for picks is 28.

The clubs having already picked the domestic players, this draft provided an opportunity for them to plug in holes in the squad and provide depth to the squad.

ISL has created excitement in India and there’s a genuine feeling that it might improve Indian football. Andy Knee of IMG expressed his delight over the attention ISL has been attracting outside of India.
