Mumbai were marked out to be perennial winners from the start of the ISL, having signed on such globally renowned talent such as Arsenal legend Freddie Ljungberg and former Manchester United and Athletico Madrid star Diego Forlan. However the script has not played out as well as Ranbir Kapoor’s side would have hoped.
Despite being such a celebrated set up, they finished seventh out of eight teams in the inaugural season. Former Chelsea, Arsenal and Real Madrid striker Nicolas Anelka was signed on as marquee player and he joined as coach in July 2015 but even that did not help as they finished 6th that season.
Alexandre Guimarães replaced him for the 2016 season and Mumbai FC topped the league table for the first time in their history last year. They were defeated in the semifinal by eventual champions Atletico de Kolkata but the signs of life shown by the team would have been encouraging to say the least.
With such tasty competition available in the league and the side finally hitting full potential under the new coach, Mumbai City FC fans have a lot to be excited about this season.
This year’s team look considerably stronger than last year, and we can definitely expect them to put up a good fight. The DY Patil Stadium has a capacity of 55000 spectators on a given match-day. Last season, most match-days were nearly sold out although the some seats remained empty.
The city has always had a strong footballing connection. With arguably one of the better sides with some world class players on display at a world class stadium it would be a crime for the citizens not to watch it live.
